Thank you all very much! Our Feature Barn for the Month is La Vigna RanchIf you are a CDS Marin Chapter member you have probably been to La Vigna Ranch. Before it was purchased by Ron & Katie LaVigna it was called San Antonio Valley Stables and was the home of several locally known trainers and many dressage competitions. When San Antonio Valley Stables was sold it was divided into two parts. The La Vignas purchased the side with the covered arena and proceeded to mold it into a beautiful private facility. Trainer Claire Long teamed up with the La Vignas in January of 2001. Initially, she brought in 6 horses and their owners. The La Vignas wanted to take it slowly and to “feel out” the training facility idea. These 6 included: Leslie Ungermann, now Leslie Taylor, with her Hannoverian mare “Bari” and Trakhener gelding “Aslan”. Breen Jenkins with her Hannoverian gelding “Hudson” and SWB gelding “Bravo”. Keith Bradkowski with his Trakhener gelding “Nicolai”. All were Marin Chapter members and competitors. Dana Strauss came with her Azteca gelding “Cielo” as a weekly haul in and eventually a winter boarder. At this time Lacey La Vigna began riding with Clare on her TB gelding “Aces”:. In April of 2001, Heather Pollard Krause joined up with Clare as her student but quickly advanced to assistant trainer. As a team, they expanded to fill the barn to its 24 horse capacity, just the right size to be active and social without being too big or too busy. La Vigna Ranch is set up very well for convenience, comfort, safety, and a happy place for horse and rider to learn and excel in dressage. The facility offers a full court covered arena, an outside short court, indoor hot water wash racks, very well bedded and ventilated stall, stalls with paddocks, and all weather turnouts. All topped off with beautiful landscaping, stone walls, and a pillard security gate. The “new” barn, finished to accomidate the growing number of horses, is insulated, light and airy, with its own big tack room and hot water wash racks. This barn has a quiet, relaxing feel, excellent for the more high strung or nervous horse, while the main barn has more entertainment for the horse that likes a more lively environment. The idea for the horses (and riders) at La Vignas is individualized full, and custom care. The horses get 3 feeds a day, deep water buckets in their stalls, and half to full day turn out. Turnouts and stalls are monitored through out the day, every day. Currently, the barn is filled with a mixture of competition horses, non competition horses, and horses in rehabilitation with Heather. The Marin CDS Chapter members and their mounts include: Breen Jenkins and “Hudson”, Leslie Taylor and “Bari”, Amy Savage (also a Jr. and a working student) with her leased Holsteiner mare “Bacall”, Penny Thatcher and her Hannovarian gelding “Barney”, Sue Klein and her Hannovarian gelding“Dakar”, Bradley James and her Friesan gelding “Tsjibbe”, Laura Hungerford and her Hannovarian mare “Renatta”, Arlene Evans and her Andalusian/Arab mare “Paloma”, Julie Bridge and her Friesan gelding “Sander” and Mckenna and Janelle Frazer with their pony cross “Isabelle”. Our newest additions are Sherri and Christine Kuhn with their geldings “Oreo” and “Ice”. Also Fredrica Lofquist with her new Danish Warmblood gelding “Printer”. This year Clare will be competing at 2nd level on Bradley James horse Tsjibbe. Heather is showing training level on Julie Bridges horse Sander, 1st level on Arlene Evan’s horse Paloma, and training level on Janelle and Mckenna’s very cute pony Issy. Both Julie and Mckenna plan to “take the reins” later this summer, once Heather has acclimated their horses to the competition arena. Breen Jenkins will compete at 4th level on Hudson and PSG if all goes well. Sue Klein will compete Dakar at 3rd level and Amy Savage at 1st level with Bacall. Laura and Renatta, Fredrica and Printer and Christine and Oreo also plan to start competing at training level this year! In closing, Clare has been a member of Marin CDS for as long as she can remember, or since she was about 12 yrs. old, (could it really have been 30 years !!??) Although La Vigna Ranch is officially considered Petaluma and Sonoma County, it was important for Clare to stay with her Marin CDS roots, and thus adding all the La Vigna Ranch group to the Marin CDS family. The La Vigna Ranch riders are all active in the Chapter. Hosting and attending meetings volunteering at shows and acting as Chapter board members. They will all continue to support and enjoy what their Chapter has to offer to all Dressage and equestrian enthusiasts! Thank you to Pam Andrews: 415 455-9363 April Meeting with Margarite MannonDespite the torrential rains and flooding creeks everywhere along the way, a good party of hardy members showed up for our meeting and pot luck dinner. Our speaker Margarite Mannon was most informative. She worked on Danas’ dog Luna and then on Hudson, Breen Jenkins horse. A few of the things I picked up were: Start with your horse in a comfortable place, his stall or cross ties. Sometimes it is helpful to have someone hold his lead rope and keep his head straight, or tie him in his stall so he will stand still. Usually once they get used to the idea of massage and realize that you are trying to help them they will stand still. Go over their body and try to find the origin of the pain. Activate the origin point. Often this is an insertion point, where the muscle meets the bone. Do a cross fiber movement on the muscle and then palm the area. Or hold the point until you feel a release. This helps more oxygen to go directly into the muscle.. Direct pressure signals the brain to make a correction, bringing on a histemic response and increased blood flow for healing. Cross fiber would be with your thumbs or fingers across against the direction of the muscle. Palming is a placing of your palm on the area. This helps to move the fluid in the joints. When a muscle is stressed or injured a protective splinting will show up around the muscle to protect it and this must be released to effect healing. An animal may be sore the next day and then feel better the following day. With horses it is suggested that you have a massage and then wait a week and re evaluate the condition. Massage is designed to restore range of motion and proper functioning of the muscle. Try experimenting and gently massaging your animals. Important tip: Walk your horse 10 to 15 minutes before working him and walk him afterwards to release the lactic acid. Margarite practices locally her number is 707 568-2160.
